Aiken Elementary School presents Living Wax Museum

Jun 08, 2023Jun 08, 2023

History came to life Friday as fifth graders at Aiken Elementary School held a Living Wax Museum .

Participating students filled the cafeteria dressed as different historical figures. Parents and teachers walked past each station, where students had a chance to read information and fun facts about their character. Each presentation was accompanied by photos and props.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Elvis Presley, Rosa Parks and Abraham Lincoln were some of the many figures portrayed at the event.

"About a month ago they had to choose a person from the 19th or 20th century that relates to our social studies unit," said fifth-grade teacher Elizabeth Hiller. "They typed up their research, and part of that was that they had to figure out something that they would wear to represent the person and really bring it to life."

The event offered many Aiken Elementary students the chance to get hands-on with history. According to Hiller, the project benefits the students not only academically, but also socially.

"It helps them with reading and writing," she said. "And it just brings them out of their shell."

Hiller looks forward to more living wax museum days in the future, and appreciates the way it allows students to showcase what they have learned.

"It's just the greatest day. I love doing this project every year," she said. "It's one of my favorite days. They get to shine, and they deserve that moment."
